Bio

 

Kostis Stafylakis is an art theorist and artist. He graduated from the Athens School of Fine Arts. He holds an MA in Modern Art and Theory (Uni. Essex) and an MA in Continental Philosophy (Uni. Essex). He received his PhD from the Department of Political Science and History, Panteion University (Athens). He was a post-doc researcher at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2011-2012) and a post-doc researcher at ASFA (2017-2019). He has taught “Research-based Art” at the Unit of Innovation and Entrepreneurship of ASFA. He currently teaches “Fine Arts” and “Art theory” as adjunct at the Department of Architecture, University of Patras. He was co-curator of the 6th Athens Biennale, ANTI, the 4th Athens Biennale, AGORA, “Twisting C(r)ash” at the Batiment d’Art Contemporain, Geneva et al. He has curated various shows, such as “A politics of lies”, Circuits & Currents (2016). He has presented papers at various conferences and symposia across the globe. Since 2004, he runs ΚavecS, along with artist Vana Kostayola, an artistic experiment with strategies of overidentification and mimetic critique. In 2017, KavecS presented a retrospective of their work at Neue Ravensburger Kunstverein. Some recent participations include the “Festival of Democracy”, Geneva (2017), “Omonoia” 5th to 6th Athens Biennial (2016), 1st NSK Folk Art Biennial (2014), Hell as Pavillion, Palais de Tokyo (2013), Truth is Concrete, Steirischer Herbst, Graz (2012), Monodrome, 3d Athens Biennale (2011), Media Impact at the 4th Moscow Biennial (2011). Vana Kostayola is an artist. After obtaining her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Athens School of Fine Arts, she spent two years in London where she completed an MA Fina Art in Central Saint Martins and an MA Interactive Media in Goldsmiths University with a government grant. In 2009, she resumes her studies an MA in Critical Curatorial Cybermedia (CCC) at the Haut Ecole d’Art et de Design (HEAD) of Geneva, thanks to a grant from the Swiss government, to deepen her knowledge on cultural studies and art theory. She has worked as a video artist with a number of dance and theater companies in Athens and now in Geneva. She worked as a professor assistant teaching drawing and painting in the Technical University of Athens (TEI). She was a professor assistant in the Centre of Addiction of Geneva, supervising the art production of the Work master (HEAD) students invited by Marie-Antoinette Chiarenza. She currently teaches art and media in Institute International of Lancy. She has presented her art projects in the psychiatric hospital of Geneva, in the Free Art public space event (Geneva 2015), in the conference of the New Lacanian School of Psychoanalysis entitled « Girl, mother daughter in 21st century ». She performed at Gitte Bohr in Berlin as part of « Cultural Symptoms » and she created the Koritsia Pame group on art and feminism. She co-founded KavecS with Kostis Stafylakis in 2004, and their work were presented amongst others, in Palais de Tokyo (2013), Truth is Concrete festival in Steirischer Herbst, Graz (2012), Monodrome 3d Athens Biennale (2011), Media Impact at the 4th Moscow Biennial (2011), Week of Democracy, Geneva (2017), Espace Sold’Out, Geneva (2019).
